Because of the way this site is laid out. I can't add things to the list except at the end, so, I will be trying to set up a "Blog" linked to this page. Thank you for your patience!
On June 14th, 2006, I took Michaelangelo, the hairless boys and Boo to our local County library as part of their Summer reading program, "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales. There were about 100 kids and some parents there to see the rats and a kitten, brought by a local Cat rescue group. So that day it was Cats and Rats! We talked about all the stuff rats can do, the different coat and ear types. I also spoke about the proper care of animals, and that rats and hamsters and other small animals are just as aware and have feelings just like a larger animal. we talked about rat care and everybody that wanted to got to pet Michaelangelo (after a quick hand wash) We received a nice certificate from the library and all the rats seemed to enjoy the outing!
Dani
On June 17th, 2006, we received 2 new boys from Dan's rescue, (See his website on the links page- the Rag.com)Leo and Sherman! What a blessing it was for Dan to drive them to us, as it is well over 100 miles round trip! AND...they came with a nice big cage! Old, but very serviceable! We thought maybe Boo and the new boys could room togeather, but Boo was just too scared and defensive. I think since he has been an only his whole life, he just never learned how to socialize with other rats. Too bad! He will just have to stay in sight of Missy Mama's cage. She is his lifelong buddy (from a distance). Leo is a beautiful Tawny light brown, and Sherman is a siamese. Both are standard ear, standard coat.   They will likely sleep a lot the next week or so as they adjust to the much higher altitude. We are at about 3,800 feet. I will have to get some pictures from Dan as our camera is in Georgia for a month with Nesa!
June 23rd, 2006.   Yesterday I teamed up with Debbie from Second Hand Rats, a nearby rescue. She has a pickup truck! We went down to Harlan Texlad in Placentia (About 70 miles one way) and Each of us got 4 bags of stuff. I got 4 bags (33 lbs each, so 132 lbs!) of rat food.. 2014 global rodent diet. Its only 14 % protien so it's great for all our rats. We can easily add extra protien for the girls and the younger boys. Hopefully, that will last 2 months. We will see! So that was $80, by the time you add in the money I chipped in for gas. Ouch! It was a fun trip. Nice to be able to compare notes with another rescue! Debbie is a biologist specializing in mammals so I had a chance to learn things too! It's supposed to be 112 degrees F. here today, so I hope we don't lose power! I just got out of bed. I'm paying today for being up too much yesterday. But I knew I'd be in pain so I've planned a rest day today. All the critters got banana today as a treat and they all seemed to enjoy it a lot! (Not the cats, of course...the got chicken!)
June 26th, 2006. It has been really hot, 110- 112 degrees F.! The humidity is way more than we are used to! Had the swamp cooler running day and night and everyone seems to be doing ok with that and the fans running. All the ratkins got frozen veggies as a treat ad that was a big hit! Discovered Felix can hear the regular vaccume (and is scared of it) but not the shop vac! That he thinks is a stick with a cool tail that I run arround the floor for him to chase! LOL wierd how is hearing is so spotty. They say it's going to be hot the rest of the week. I hope the humidity breaks, or I'll have to switch to being mostly nocturnal!
July 13 2006
Hot! Hot! Hot! It's been over 100 degrees F. for two weeks! Glad the humidity is down ( 8-10%) I'm glad to have Nesa back home. We are getting the house in shape and trying to come up with new fund raising ideas. This weekend we will be going to a tattoo convention in hopes that tattoo people are rat people as well! We also will start doing some face painting once we get a table and shade worked out. All the critters are doing well. Gunther has almost forgiven Nesa for being gone a month. Had a real scare a few days before Nesa came home. The swamp cooler started making a screaming noise at 3 in the morning! I turned it off until the sun came up, then went outside and started taking the unit apart. I'm really worried, because the rats, and rabbits both don't do well at all in the heat and it's been over 100 every day! I figured out it was the bearings and knew I couldn't aford to replace them, and couldn't even change them by myself! So I found the oil ports, went online to find out what kind of oil they use....the same as my car!!! So I took a dropper and got some out of an oil can in my car and oiled both bearings really well and prayed.   It worked!! So now we are still cool. Thank goodness.
July 20, 2006
Sad day today. We lost Jack today. He had been fighting a tumor but had seemed to be doing better these last few days. I had been giving him a warm bath and lots of extra cuddles every day and he was eating his fruits and veggies well. But this am as I was drying him after his bath, he sighed, snuggled my hand and just quit breathing. I couldn't have asked for a more peaceful end, but it's still hard to see them go. He will be missed by us and his cagemate Han-Pan.
July 21, 2006
The Swamp cooler died again today!!!! It's 115 degrees F.! The Rats and Bunny especially cannot tolerate that kind of heat! While I replaced bearings Nesa misted, fanned and fed frozen veggies, but that's only a short term fix! The cooler is 20 or more years old. It's running now, but won't last for too long I don't think. I've got $8 in my bank acount so buying a new one won't happen unless we get some major donations. I guess I'll just have to pray and trust.
July 24, 2006
We will survive the month!! Got a $100 donation today! As soon as it clears the bank we will go buy frozen veggies and bottled water to freeze so that we can keep everybody cool! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! to our donor! Everybody is still hanging in there as the heat continues!
August 2, 2006
Went to the library to do face painting for the end of the summer reading program carnival. Many of the kids remembered Michaelangelo! It was lots of fun and we painted about 100 faces.
August 4, 2006
Went and picked up a new rat, "Zell" today from Petco. They think he's a bad biter, but we think he's gonna turn out cuddly! Also went and got "Patches" from the Zuni shelter. He's a 9 month old Austrailian Shepherd/ Border Collie mix who is Deaf and mostly blind. (He can see a little movement in one eye, but that's all! He's really sweet and seems to be a happy dog. The flea and Tick shampoo was a challenge! But he's clean now and minus over 150 ticks!!
August 8, 2006
Went to "Tuesday Morning" store. It's new and we'd never been to one. Found a backback for Patches for $10!!! Now he can carry his own toys and water when we go for walks. Also found some cute note cards cheap too. Patches is doing well learning to be calm in the house and walking well on a leash. We still need to get him a choaker chain or gentle leader collar to make it easier for him to "feel" what we want him to do.
August 9, 2006
Well....we said we were full, but we went to Petco to get some chew toys for Patches teathing. AND.......They had about 15 dwarf hamsters that had been brought in for adoption. We took the smallest 2, one is really young and tiny and the other is bigger, but still young. We plan to socialize them really well so they can become educational animals for us.
August 14, 2006
Sad day. We lost little Tic Tac last night for an unknown reason. He was doing fine, growing and running on his wheel with Bear. Then an hour later he was just gone. Sometimes we never know why, but he still touched our hearts.
August 16, 2006
Now our Bear is gone too! Just like little Tic Tac! From fine one minute to dead the next. They must have come to us with something wrong, but we may never know what.
Patches is doing well with his back pack and new training lead. He's starting to learn more of what we want and calming down some. He's such a sweet boy, he's even charmed "old lady" Sister into some rough and tumble play!
September 7, 2006
What a busy time for us! Back to school and we are adding a new member to the house, my future Son-in-Law! He arrived from Georgia yesterday. We are moving and seperating some of our boys who are going through a "grumpy" phase or just looking like they need some special attention. We lost Miss Midnight, but she went peacefully and felt good right up to the last day. Miss Mamas is our little old miricle lady! Her huge tumpors are slowly going away on their own! So we are not changing anything and just watching in amazement. She seems to have never felt bad, just frustrated at how they were getting in her way, and now is relieved that she can groom more easily again! We will be heading out to the LA County fair tomorrow to meet up with one of our wonderful donors and getting some more bedding. Then on Sunday, we will be at the Riverside Metropolitain Muesum for "Animals at Work" day! Should be a lot of fun and it is cooling off which will be very nice!

Event honors working animals

09:50 AM PDT on Monday, September 11, 2006

The Press-Enterprise

Everybody knows about service dogs that guide the blind, but have you seen a service rat?

You might get your chance Sunday at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum. It's hosting "Animals at Work Day," an event with two-legged and four-legged guest stars.

Dani L. Moore, who runs a high desert rescue facility called Tripod Ranch, says she via e-mail will bring Michaelangelo, a velveteen dumbo rat that senses the onset of debilitating spasms and alerts her to take medication.

Allison Campbell, the museum's education curator, also expects hearing dogs, search-and-rescue dogs and mounted posse horses. The animals will be in the plaza in front of the museum and parking lot

The museum will screen episodes from "The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin." The 1950s TV series about a courageous German shepherd is featured in a "Hollywood and the Cavalry" exhibit.

Riverside County's Department of Animal Services will have pets available for adoption, and Hartz will supply free samples of pet products.

The event is free and goes from 1 to 6 p.m. The museum is at 3580 Mission Inn Ave. 951-826-5273.

So, in the span of about a week, we likely had close to 300 people pet michaelangelo and learn about our little rescue!
Both Nissa and I are feeling under the weather, I'm sure just from pushing too hard.

Wow have we been busy! Sam arrived on the 6th and has been doing great! He's working especially well with Patches, the deaf blind dog. We went to the LA County Fair on the 8th because opening day was only $1 admission! Then Sunday we were featured at the Riverside museum for "Animals at Work Day".
